ABOUT NABO

Nabo is the social network for your suburb connecting neighbours in over 8,200 communities across Australia.

Get Fit for Free

Want to shed those last kilos? Or maybe you just want to get healthier? We're bombarded everyday with promises of 'cheap' gym memberships, but you'd be lucky to find one that'll charge you less than $50 a month (adding up to $600 a year!). Signing up to a gym can be a costly commitment, especially for fitness beginners. Luckily for you, we've figured out some ways to get fit without spending a single cent.

TAKE A STROLL

Instead of pounding your feet on the treadmill for an hour, explore the world on the other side of your door! Walking or running outside is a great way to both explore your local area and burn some calories. Take a new route each day for variety and try to incorporate some hills into your workout. Why not make a social outing of it by inviting along friends and family?

GO FOR A SWIM

Here are just some of the benefits of swimming: it engages your entire body, it's low-impact on your muscles and joints, it improves your cardiovascular health, it builds muscles and it burns fat. This activity is suitable for all ages and can be a lot of fun! You can swim at your local pool or take a trip down to your nearest beach. If you're not a particularly strong swimmer, try to find a beach with an ocean pool as the Australian surf can be quite rough. And don't forget your sunscreen!

Nabo works better with more people. Build a stronger community.

PLAY AROUND ON THE OUTDOOR GYMS

If you're looking to build muscle, hit up your closest outdoor gym. Outdoor gyms can usually be found near beaches or in parks and, best of all, are completely free to use. Work on your chin-ups or focus on sculpting those abs. Burrows Park's gym even offers a treadmill and a rowing machine for cardio lovers. Enjoy the fresh air and sun as you complete your workout.

DUST OFF YOUR BIKE

Is your poor bike sitting by itself in the shed, covered with a fine layer of dust? Pump up those tires, wipe down that seat and take it out for a spin. Cycling is a low-impact exercise that allows you to build your stamina and your muscles at the same time. You can cover large distances on your bike, so why not cycle to work or the shops and save on some petrol? Make sure your helmet is a good fit and that you've got reflective gear and lights for those night rides.

Chat with your neighbours about everything from local issues to bin collection.

GET CYBERFIT

The Internet is one of the best places to get your fitness info. You can join forums to chat to other fitness enthusiasts, watch YouTube videos to perfect your lifting technique and download the latest cardio workout from fitness websites. It's a fantastic way to keep up to date with the latest fitness trends and may also put you in contact with your future fitness buddy!

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

Apologies to all the fried food fanatics and sugar addicts out there, but exercise is no substitute for a good diet. Even if you're not looking to lose weight, a balanced diet can vastly improve your health and reduce the risk of a number of chronic diseases. Try to get your two fruit and five veggies a day while cutting down on the takeout. If you need more advice, talk to your GP about changing your diet. With the right food and drink, you'll have more energy to smash through your workouts!
